I gave a presentation in which I show 5 things you can do at home with kids, in 10 minutes. In the spirit of the things-explainer by XKCD, I only use the 1000 most used English words, or: ten-hundred most used words, because a thousand is not on the list.... The video is posted below.
Using the ten-hundred most used words forces me to really think about not using jargon. It makes this presentation a bit weird, but it is a very good way to exercise talking to people outside of your field.
This talk was given in the "Make It More Simple: The Up-Goer Five Giving-It-a-Try (aka Challenge)" session held at the AGU Fall Meeting 2015. In the session, everyone presented their work using only the 1000 most used words. It was awesome.
